I captured this photo of a Trumpet Fish at Honaunau Bay on the Big Island of Hawaii. This image reminds me of the interesting features on the right side of the Bay with the big rocks covered in coral and the gaps of white sand where you often see Goat Fish combing the bottom for food (you can see a small school in this photo at the back of the patch of sand).
Trumpet Fish are found between 2-3 feet in length. They hover and swim around the reef. We saw one literally suspended inside a school of other fish like it was attempting to hide.
I don’t know why they’re named after the trumpet which I played growing up. There’s also a variation of Trumpet Fish colored a bright yellow
