While visiting Badlands National Park in South Dakota last summer we experienced some severe thunderstorms (one storm predicted golf ball sized hail, which did occur but luckily for us some distance away). But we also had some wonderfully sunny days. And one day that had mix of rain and sun. As we drove from one end of the park to the other my wife noticed a great big rainbow behind us. We pulled the car over and captured some photos of that beautiful sight.

Apart from the being able to capture the entire rainbow itself in this photo, I like the contrast between the sunny grasslands below and the dark foreboding clouds above. I intentionally stood in the center of the highway (being careful to make sure no cars were approaching) as I wanted the perspective of the roadway and the center yellow line going off into the distance. And the inclusions of our shadows taking the image was the “cherry on top” of a great experience.
