I captured this photo where the lava from 2018 eruptions of KÄ«lauea volcano advanced and cut off this road and many others in the area of Leilani Estates on the Big Island of Hawaii. Some 700 homes were swallowed by the advancing lava during May of that year.

There’s something captivating about the lava that just stops here – the lines of the roadway, both on the side as well as the double yellow center line lead the eye straight into the hardened lava. On our first trip to the Big Island I was surprised how much of this largest Hawaiian island remains mostly barren (dry) lava fields.

This is Kapoho Pokoiki Road just outside Isaac Hale Beach Park.
