While visiting the ancient town of Hot An, Vietnam we took a vespa tour through the surrounding countryside. We rode on the back of the motorized scooters and made several stops to experience the local culture.

I captured this image as we saw how these beautiful woven mats were made. Another woman (not pictured) would slide in the single strands of colored or natural fiber and this woman would pull them all together. The would do this all day long – creating dozens of these mats.

Still to this day I am captivated by the joy in this woman’s smile. I also like her pose, which was not staged. I just captured her image while she was in the middle of her next movement – her hands paused momentarily.

Beyond that you can see we’re in the bedroom of their home, one of these women mats on the bed behind her. The fan standing at back is a reminder of the sweltering heat that often comes in the summer months in Vietnam.
