On the Big Island of Hawaii, on the far side of Hawaii Volcanos National Park you’ll find the largest collection of petroglyphs in all of Polynesia. You drive down Chain of Craters Road and park on the roadside. Then it’s a hike just under 2 miles roundtrip over a path thru hardened lava to Pu’u loa where there are some 23,00 petroglyphs were carved into the lava rock, with the earliest estimated to be some 500 years old.
